Hi! I’m Fran

I’m an Artist and Creative Producer.

I grew up in the North York Moors National Park (on a sheep farm in a first generation farming family!), graduating in 2009 from Newcastle University with a BA (Hons) Fine Art. I now live in Northumberland, working as an Artist & Creative Producer to create original works of art.

My rural upbringing has shaped who I am and focused my creative career on addressing access and equality in the arts; all with a determination that anything is possible!

I co-produce large-scale projects with creative teams & communities that enable more people to take part & make decisions about arts & culture.

I currently work freelance with clients across the North East, including as Associate Project: New Projects with Northumberland-based theatre company November Club, and as Creative Producer with Northern Heartlands (PlaceLab: Weardale & Shildon) and TimbaDash Theatre.

I worked in Creative People and Places programmes across the North East of England for 9 years. Prior to that, I worked freelance in film, music and visual arts projects as well as for leading North East participatory arts charity Helix Arts for 6 years as Projects Assistant and later Project Manager.

I’ve curated exhibitions in professional galleries to community venues; produced live music performances with musicians, choirs, brass bands and young people; commissioned outdoor arts events for heritage venues; and more.

My training and practice as a visual artist, creating drawings and screenprints, enables me to bring a creative eye and curatorial experiences to projects.

Against the odds, I’ve carved out a living as an Artist and developed a creative practice that sustains me and my family.

Thanks to an Arts Council England Developing Your Creative Practice grant in 2024, I’ve gained in-depth insights into areas of distribution for artists including art licensing, galleries and fairs, and explored the unique potential of rurally-based artistic companies to contribute to community and overcome barriers to equality in the arts.

A DYCP grant has also supported me to make a step change in my creative career; expanding into collaborative landscape imagery and merging the best of my producing and artistic practices to create a holistic, sustainable future.

I can’t wait to share my learning with you to support your creative journey!

Exclusive insights from 15 years making a living as an Artist

Fran is a strategic thinker who has an eye on the bigger picture at the same time as paying attention to the detail. She enjoys collaboration and there are rich two-way benefits flowing between her work as an artist and as a producer
